Back To School Road Safety Tips
Aug 11, 2025As students return to school, Harris County Water Control & Improvement District No. 119 (HCWCID 119) urges everyone to make safety a top priority in school zones, neighborhoods, and anywhere children may be walking, biking, or riding the bus. Following simple safety guidelines can help keep children safe throughout the school year.
Tips for Drivers:
- Expect changes in local traffic, especially near schools, and adjust your plans as needed.
- Stay alert at all times; never text or use your phone while driving.
- Always stop for school bus stop signs, no matter which direction you are traveling.
- Be especially cautious during early morning and midafternoon hours when children are present.
- Never pass vehicles that are stopped at a crosswalk; children may be crossing.
Tips for Pedestrians:
- Use sidewalks when available. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
- Always look both ways before crossing streets and make sure cars come to a complete stop before crossing.
- Never push, play, or shove while walking near roads.
- Avoid using a mobile device while at crosswalks or when walking near traffic.
Tips for Cyclists:
- Ensure bicycles fits well and are in good working condition. Check tires regularly.
- Wear a properly fitted helmet and other appropriate safety gear.
- Discuss safe biking practices with children, including staying alert and maintaining predictable movements.
- Teach children to use hand signals to indicate turns and to always follow traffic rules.
- When crossing intersections, walk the bike across rather than riding.
If you witness illegal or unsafe activity, contact local authorities.
Following these safety practices helps ensure a safer school year for everyone. Share these reminders with friends and neighbors to keep your community safe.
